News : Bangalore University Lists Wrong Ragging Helpline
Bangalore, August 18, 2014 -- Ragging incidents generally take place during the initial weeks of the academic year when seniors try to bully the newcomers. Freshers at Bangalore University (BU), however, are unable to call the ragging helpline this season. The reason? Students have been provided with the wrong toll-free number. The BU website mentions the toll number as 1-800-180-552.
"The first thing that I was told by my peers was to make a note of the ragging helpline. So I logged into the BU website and noted down the number. One day, I decided to check the number, and to my shock, I found that it was wrong. When I discussed the issue with my friends, they said even they had the same experience. When I went to ask my lecturers, they said they didn't have any idea," said a student.
A second-year BBM student from a city college said, "I wanted to complain against ragging done by a few outsiders near our college campus. But when I tried to call the number provided on the BU website, I got the reply that it's an invalid number."
When the BM reporter tried calling, the number was found invalid. Upon checking with officials, they disclosed that though the University Grants Commission (UGC) had issued the correct toll-free number, it was wrongly entered in the BU website, leading to the confusion. K K Seethamma, Registrar (Administration), BU, said: "We have a separate number for ragging cases which will be updated on the website. If students are facing problems at their college campuses, they can call up the number and give the complaint. The number wrongly mentioned is that of the UGC, which is a Delhi number. We will rectify the error."
To complain directly to Bangalore University in case of incidents of ragging, students can call 080-22961096.
