News : Beware of Fake Toll-free Numbers on the Rise in Kerala

Kochi, India, Feb 17, 2022 -- Use of fraudulent toll-free numbers in the name of banks, other financial institutions and mobile service providers continue to rise across the state. The scam involves acquiring a number similar to the real toll-free number and using it as a mode to deceive customers. Further, these numbers are posted on various websites for misleading customers who search for toll-Free numbers. These fake toll-free numbers can also be found when doing a Google search.

Further, the fraudsters will also register the phone number under the company name in True Caller. Like other cyber scams, they have set up a call centre-like system to communicate with people who fall prey to their scams. They will seek the bank details as well as other information from the callers. By helping people generate OTP, scammers will eventually have complete control over the bank transactions of the caller.

The RBI has earlier issued guidelines and warning to tackle the issue. However, cyber police said that such scams have been on the rise in recent times.

Fraudsters are sending messages under the banner of banks requesting updating of KYC details. According to the Cyber Crime Police from Kochi, people who call the toll free number are losing money.
