News : BlackBerry Hires COO From LiveOps
July 21, 2014 -- BlackBerry Ltd. has hired a marketing and customer service executive from the cloud and mobile messaging sectors as its new chief operating officer.
The Waterloo, Ont.-based company said it has appointed as COO Marty Beard, the former chairman and chief executive officer of LiveOps Inc., a provider of cloud applications for customer service.
Mr. Beard has also worked for a subsidiary of Sybase Inc., the enterprise software and services company John Chen headed up before becoming chairman and chief executive officer of BlackBerry last November.
The COO position had been vacant since November after a management shakeup by Mr. Chen.
Other former Sybase employees now at BlackBerry include senior vice-president of marketing Mark Wilson and global sales president Eric Johnson.
Mr. Beard will be responsible for cross-functional organizations, including marketing, BlackBerry 10 application development, customer care and quality, the company said.
He will also be in charge of best practices and processes.
Before joining LiveOps, Mr. Beard was president of Sybase 365, a mobile messaging and mobile commerce services unit.
He also worked at Oracle as vice-president of its e-commerce unit, Oracle Online.
Mr. Beard is to start immediately, BlackBerry said.
The COO position was last held by Kristian Tear, who left the company late last year.
Mr. Chen is working at turning around the company by outsourcing some of its manufacturing activities and refocusing on so-called "enterprise" clients, a long-time core customer base.
