News : Bolingbrook to Outsource 911 Call Center
Bolingbrook, IL, Aug 27, 2014 -- Bolingbrook's village board voted Tuesday night to outsource the town's 911 dispatch center and utilize the services of a Will County intergovernmental organization for its emergency calls.
The vote will move the town's 911 operations to the Western Will County Communications Center, also known as WESCOM, an intergovernmental organization headquartered in Plainfield that consists of 19 area police and fire agencies.
Mayor Roger Claar said the move will save the village annually and do away with 18 full-time positions.
WESCOM executive director Steve Rauter said WESCOM hopes to hire those dispatchers, and village documents state that bringing on those dispatchers will ensure a smooth transition for the town.
"We are looking forward to bringing those folks on board with us," he said Tuesday.
The switch will take place Nov. 1. Bolingbrook Police Chief Kevin McCarthy said incentives are being offered to the Bolingbrook dispatchers to join WESCOM, including no entrance exam or background check.
Those Bolingbrook dispatchers will also have their time working in Bolingbrook counted when WESCOM factors in their pay, he said.
Village Attorney James Boan said 911 call center consolidation is going on throughout Illinois and the country, and that an "extensive analysis" was conducted by village staff before a decision to make the move to WESCOM was finalized.
Rauter said WESCOM wants to ensure that Bolingbrook's residents have confidence in the organization.
Claar said both jobs are union positions, and that he had gotten a small number of inquiries from concerned citizens on the change.
"I don't govern by the number of calls or emails I get on an issue, but I do listen," he said.
