News : BPO Turns to Interns to Acquire More Talent
Cebu, Philippine, Aug 3, 2015 -- Convergys Philippines has reached out to provincial areas in the Visayas to attract more graduating students to pursue careers in the BPO industry through their on-the-job training (OJT) program.
Lorelie Juntilla, Convergys Cebu senior director for operations, said Convergys Cebu has already tapped at least 40 state universities and colleges in Cebu, Bohol and Leyte for their talent development program, where the company itself visits the state universities and colleges to introduce the careers and opportunities in BPM and encourage graduating students to complete their internships in their company.
"Unlike the usual job fairs we conduct to hire employees, the company has embarked on a more long-term program that allows us to reach out to the talents in provincial areas. We provide trainings to teachers and internships to students. We bring them here so they would know what the industry or the job is all about," said Juntilla in an interview.
Convergys Cebu has enrolled between 600 and 700 students in their internship program since 2012, of which around 95 to 98 percent were absorbed by the company. The firm also conducts training programs for teachers.
Nationwide, it already recorded 800 OJT graduates, with majority of them coming from the Visayas.
"This is not just a plug and play model. We reach out to schools and tell them our requirements. We also give them feedback so they’d would know which areas in teaching they need to improve to produce better and more prepared graduates," said Juntilla, adding that trainings for teachers not only involves English communication proficiency but also better understanding about the industry.
"We’d want teachers to know better about the opportunities in the BPO so that they can encourage and tell their students there is career growth in this thriving industry," she added.
Juntilla said they want to correct the misconception of the academe that working in the BPO is just all about taking calls, but to see it as an entry point for careers in the corporate world.
IT-BPO is one of the country’s growth economic drivers.
Last year it posted 18.7 percent growth in revenue to about $18.4 billion. The sector’s sustained growth was driven largely by the growing demand for its services from the global off-shoring industry, particularly in the voice and non-voice sectors, healthcare information management, global in-house centers (GICs), as well as gaming and animation.
As of the end of 2014, the industry employed some 1.03 million people. Of this number, 630,000 employees were with the contact center sector.
The firm’s OJT program is the company’s response to the government’s call to explore other areas in the country to ensure continued talent supply for the BPO industry, whose revenue is projected to overtake the overseas remittances.
