News : British Gas Plans to Axe 100 Leicestershire Jobs
Feb 20, 2014 -- British Gas is planning to axe around 100 jobs in Leicestershire.
The utility provider said the proposed job losses would affect call centre and administrative staff at its Spinneyside site in Grove Park, Enderby.
The call centre, which employs 700 people, looks after business customers.
A spokeswoman said the move would help to cut costs because these functions would be replaced by new technology.
"We can pass on these potential savings to customers," she said.
The spokeswoman said: "We are determined to minimise compulsory redundancies.
"We will be consulting with our employees and their representatives. Wherever possible, we’ll be working hard to find redeployment opportunities."
British Gas has begun a 45-day consultation with affected staff. The company said they would be offering roles at its call centre at its parts and repairs division in Aylestone Road, Leicester, where 160 jobs are being created.
The spokeswoman said: "We hope that as many people as possible will be able to continue working for British Gas in this expanded centre.
"We will look at agency and fixed-term contractor roles currently within the business and we will hold or delay recruitment where appropriate to minimise the impact on our permanent employees."
The company said there were no plans to move the affected roles overseas.
