News : BT Call Centre Staff Laid Off Just Before Christmas
Dec 23, 2014 -- A group of BT call centre workers have been laid off just before Christmas.
The 11 employees, who were taken on through employment agency Manpower at BT’s Eastlake Street contact centre, have been given their notice and are expected to work their last day on Christmas Eve.
A Manpower spokesperson said: "Following a review of resourcing by BT, Manpower has notified 11 employees that their field assignments at BT’s site in Plymouth will be brought to an end. Manpower will support those affected in looking for new roles."
A BT spokesman said: "There is no change to the 72 BT employees at the centre. "The 11 posts are no longer needed because of a variety of factors.
"These include significant investment in improving the skills of staff at the site; process improvements; and fewer repair calls being received by the Plymouth centre, partly because customers are increasingly using on-line services to contact us."
One of the employees, who did not want to be named, told The Herald: "We are technically agency staff but it is a long-term employment.
"I personally have been working here for nearly four years and some affected have been here for 11 years.
"They told us on Wednesday (December 17) we are no longer required by BT and won't be working for BT any more, and gave us a week’s notice so our last day of employment is Christmas Eve.
"Apparently BT have made the decision for the progression of the business."
