News : Call Center Bill Signed into Law
Albany, Dec 30, 2014 -- A bill further assuring that local call centers remain in the area was signed into law.
Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation that sets forth specific procedures for the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) to follow when a gas or electric company seeks to close a local call center.
"This important measure closes loopholes that utility companies previously exploited," said Assemblyman Kevin Cahill (D, Ulster, Dutchess), a sponsor of the bill. "It guarantees a formal comment period that will allow for a full airing of all relevant issues before a call center is allowed to move or close, jobs are lost or rate payers are further inconvenienced."

Enactment of this law will provide for an open forum by the PSC that makes the continued quality of service for consumers the subject, and not corporate expediency."
Cahill previously pushed legislation that was enacted in 2010, which requires the PSC to convene an open hearing if an existing call center or facility that provides customer service assistance is proposed to be closed or relocated.
