News : Call Center Jobs Open; Not Many Coming
Southington, CT, USA, June 23, 2016 -- With 100 or more job openings said to be available in a new Bristol call center, a representative at Hampton, Va.-based Faneuil, Inc., said she was surprised only a "handful" of people had trickled in for a three-day hiring event in Southington.
Other than that, there was no comment from the organization, including lead jobs recruiter Patricia Roberts, who declined to speak as she sat behind the folding table in a conference room at Homewood Suites. Company executives have been closed-mouth about the new call center’s opening next month at the former Cigna building, 32 Valley St..
The company is holding its hiring event at Homewood Suites, 1096 West St., Southington. Training is scheduled to start July 11, with a paid, two-hour orientation before that, Roberts said.
Even potential employees said they were surprised about the level of secrecy surrounding the new call center.
"There are 100 opportunities here. I called their corporate office and they’ve been very light on prospects," said Teresa Jo Conroy-Acampora, shaking her head Thursday, as she was on her way in to interview. "I don’t get it. It’s a tremendous opportunity for Bristol in rejuvenating a city that does not have a strong workforce."
Two hundred flyers announcing the event were distributed to businesses, employment offices, city buildings and local colleges this week. On Monday, Roberts said they were looking for candidates with at least two years experience in customer service and a high school diploma or GED. People were asked to "dress to impress" and bring their resumes. Job offers may be extended on the same day as the interview, the flyers also noted.

"All you have to do is look around you, look on social media, there’s no opportunity too large or too small," Conroy-Acampora said. "When opportunity knocks you have to get out of your chair and go get it."
"I think it’s a great opportunity to bring businesses back to Connecticut. It’s a great way to stimulate the economy," said Solymar Vazquez, a New Britain resident said, as she was coming out of the hour-long test and interview. "I got the job. I’m just waiting for my background check to go through."
Vazquez said she also didn’t understand why more people hadn’t shown up for the hiring event for the jobs that pay between $10.73 and 11.51 an hour, according to the jobs website, Indeed.com.
"It’s a good opportunity for people," she said, shrugging. "If you want a job, get out there and get your foot in the door."
