News : CallActive Call Centre Collapses, 200 People Lose their Jobs
Melbourne, Australia, Nov 30, 2015 -- Almost 200 people have lost their jobs in Melbourne after the collapse of call centre employer CallActive.
The company had call centres in East Bentleigh and Wellington in New Zealand, where workers have also lost their jobs.
The Australian Services Union (ASU) is working with the company's 178 former employees to help them recover up to three weeks in missed wages.
"It would appear that the company has collapsed," ASU secretary Ingrid Stitt said.
Workers learned the news late on Friday, after wages were not paid earlier that week.
"They're about three weeks out of pocket in terms of wages and then there is an unspecified amount owed in annual leave and long service leave," Ms Stitt said.
"We are doing a lot of work in making sure workers actually know what their rights are."
A Facebook support group has emerged, where workers are able to share advice and support each other.
"This is a big blow to all those workers at this call centre, particularly being this close to Christmas," Ms Stitt said.
The ASU said liquidators were being brought in.
