News : Calls to Alzheimer's Association Helpline Increase During Holidays

#contactcenterworld

Charleston, WV, USA, Nov, 2021 -- As many of us return to in-person holiday gatherings after long periods of being apart due to the pandemic, you may want to be on the lookout for mental declines in loved ones.

The Alzheimer’s Association reports the number of calls to its 24/7 helpline swell during and after the holidays when people visiting friends and family become aware that there is something not quite right.

Teresa Morris, program director for the Alzheimer’s Association West Virginia chapter, said consistent forgetfulness is just one sign of mental decline.

"You might see changes in attitude, maybe mood," Morris said. "These folks become more agitated sometimes. They might be a little more grouchy at times. These folks can have changes in their sleeping patterns."

Morris said the association generally sees a spike in calls to its 24/7 helpline during and after the holidays when people visiting with friends and family notice something isn’t quite right.

"So you just have to look for those very subtle changes. Sometimes they’re so small that you don’t even think about it. Or, sometimes they’re so small, you just go, ‘Well, you know, my mom’s got a lot going on. She’s just got a lot on her mind. But when you start seeing consistent changes in behavior and routine and attitude and mood," Morris said.

If you are concerned, you can call the association’s helpline at 800-272-3900. Morris says it’s staffed by trained clinicians around the clock to ensure that people looking for answers have somewhere to turn.
