News : Caregiver Support Hotline Helps Those Who are Caring for Others
Oct 28, 2013 -- If you’re caring for a loved one, a new hotline and web resource may be just what you need for advice and direction.
An estimated one in four Canadians are now providing care for a loved ones, according to About Canada Cares, a not-for-profit program that provides a virtual community, grassroots events and caregiver coaching program to people across the country.
Canada Cares is a partnership between health-care organizations and businesses across the country including Canadian Red Cross, Saint Elizabeth Health Care, Alzheimer Society of Toronto and more.
Toronto residents in need of caregiving support can call, toll-free, the Canada Cares Caregiver Support Line at 1-855-619-5021 for advice and direction, and access a list of local home and residential care services at www.canadacares.org
"We’ve launched this service in response to a strong community need," said Caroline Tapp-McDougall, chair of Canada Cares in a release. "Studies show that of the five million family caregivers across the country, many don’t have the support they need to care for their loved ones and don’t know where to turn to find it."
As a result, they tend to make mistakes, and the outcome is often personal burnout, she said.
