News : Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Communications Center to Get an Upgrade
Little Valley, N.Y., May 16, 2014 -- The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Communications Center is about to get a an upgrade.
The Cattaraugus County Legislature authorized acceptance of the New York State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services grant. The grant is part of the Statewide Interoperable Communications Program.
Sheriff Timothy Whitcomb said the Communications Divisions received word of the grant, which is 100 percent funded.
"This is a followup to the direction we have been heading in with emergency communications," Whitcomb said. "It will enhance our capabilities throughout Cattaraugus County and come close to 100 percent coverage, which is difficult in a county like this."
The project will take about 18 months to complete, the sheriff said.
Besides police communications, fire and ambulance radio communications will also be improved.
"We’re excited," the sheriff said. "This will greatly enhance our communications system."
The Sheriff’s Emergency Communications Center in Little Valley is the designated 911 call center for Salamanca and Olean and the state police, Whitcomb said. The centralization of these essential police and other emergency communications will prove to be more efficient and more effective, he added.
