News : Over 2,000 Use Tamil Nadu Government's 104 Counselling Helpline
Chennai, India, Dec 30, 2015 -- More than 2,000 people called '104' counselling helpline post the floods in Chennai to cope with trauma, said Tamil Nadu health minister Dr C Vijaya Baskar.
Speaking at a function organised to mark the second anniversary of the state-funded helpline, the minister said, "After the situation returned to normal, 2,066 benefited from this helpline. This service gave people confidence. Some calls lasted for three hours."
During the floods, both 108 (ambulance) and 104 services remained unaffected, said an official. "All our ambulances were on the roads. Some of them were affected with rain water but we got back up vehicles. We had 1,300 litres of diesel as backup," said regional manager for GVK-EMRI B Prabhudoss.
The ambulances were also used for transportation of essential relief items. "People who had extra food, clothes, water would call us. People who were in distress would call us. We would simply connect them and used our ambulances to deliver items," he said.
