News : City of St. John’s, Province Reach Agreement for 911 Call Centre
St. John’s NfL, Canada, February, 2015 -- The provincial government and the City of St. John’s have reached an agreement that will see the St. John’s Regional Fire Department handling all 911 calls east of Goobies on the Avalon Peninsula.
The agreement for the St. John’s call centre includes a provision for multi-year budgeting, a news release from the provincial government says. Depending on who paid for it, intellectual property will belong to either the city or NL 911 Bureau Inc.
Provincewide 911 service will come into effect in the first week of March.
The St. John’s call centre will be one of two in the province, and an update is expected soon on the other one.
"The City of St. John’s, through the St. John’s Regional Fire Department, has provided the 911 service to the region for over 20 years. Following successful negotiations we are pleased to have reached an agreement with the NL 911 Bureau Inc. and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to continue to provide this critical service to residents of the Avalon Peninsula," said St. John’s Mayor Dennis O’Keefe.
