News : City Police Launch Helpline for Women
Kochi, India, April 7, 2016 -- Women in trouble can now dial the number ‘7559899100’ to seek police help.
The helpline number, to be operational on round-the-clock basis, will be displayed in all public transport facilities and auto rickshaws. In the first phase, the police have prepared a rough estimate of close to 9,000 auto rickshaws and buses plying in the city.
"Stickers bearing the helpline will be distributed to buses and auto rickshaws, so that women commuters get to know about the helpline and make use of it. Apart from city buses, long distance ones plying to and from the city will also display the helpline," said an official.
Soon after receiving the call, the jurisdictional police will be intimated. If the case is serious, senior police officers will also be alerted
Apart from call and message services, the helpline will be enabled with the popular messenger platform WhatsApp. With this, women can pass information on to the police in the form of pictures or videos.
Meanwhile, officials said the police would soon release a short film on women’s safety. The short film starring popular stars will be used to publicise the helpline. The step comes close on the heels of the Kochi Police launching women friendly auto rickshaw services. Earlier, it had launched ‘Beetle’ patrol wherein women cops were deputed in city buses for women’s security.
