News : Contact Disaster Centre in Case of Flooding Emergency

Nairobi, Kenya, Apr 18, 2024 - The government has advised Kenyans in flood prone areas to seek help from via toll-free line 0800-721-571 incase of emergency.

Interior PS Raymond Omollo has also urged the public to remain vigilant and to follow periodic evacuation advisories issued by government and humanitarian agencies.

"Report emergencies promptly through the toll-free line: 0800-721-571. Together, let us stay prepared and resilient," Omollo said.

The advisory comes as much of the country continues to experience enhanced rains which have caused flash floods in most low-lying areas.

The PS, who had visited Masinga Dam, said the dam is already full to capacity and the Kiambere Dam is expected to follow suit soon.

He cautioned communities living downstream in the Tana Delta in the counties of Garissa and Tana River to be on the lookout as flash floods are likely to occur in those areas.

"They are at a very great risk of being displaced with a lot of casualties if adequate precaution and care is not taken," Omollo said.

"Therefore, we are basically sounding an alarm and asking the communities in the two counties particularly that they listen and take heed of the advisory that they need to relocate."

He said emergency response teams led by National Government Administration Officers (NGA0) are ready and willing to offer assistance.

He said county commissioners and their teams in hotspot areas and officers from other government offices are also on standby to offer help.

"We are appealing to the public that hey listen to those advisories," Omollo said.

The PS said emergency teams of the National Emergency Response Centre are working under the leadership of the National Disaster Operation Centre at Nyayo House.

The centre has all ministries represented alongside development and non-government actors.

PS Omollo said this will ease the coordination of emergency response across the country.

He said the government is coming up with long-term solutions to the dams' spillage, saying Energy CS Davis Chirchir is in talks to help mitigate the effects of the overflow from the dams along the Tana River.

Omollo further cautioned that waterborne diseases outbreak is likely as floods persist and asked Kenyans to take precaution to avert loss of lives.

Earlier, Kilifi county government issued a toll-free number to aid its residents in case of flooding in their locality.

While urging the public to take caution on the possibility of flooding in the prone areas, the county said residents can use number 1535.
