News : Convergys Closing Welland Operations

Welland, Ontario, Canada, Oct, 2018 -- A call centre that has operated in Welland since 2002 will dial its last numbers by the end of the year.

Convergys announced this week it will close its doors on Lincoln Street on Dec. 8, resulting in 100 people losing their jobs.

A spokesperson for the company said staff who have been employed there for more than five years will be eligible for severance pay, and that some remaining employees will be able to accept work-from-home positions.

The people who lose their jobs as a result of the closure can apply to openings at other Convergys locations, the closest in Ontario being London and Belleville.

"It was a decision based between our client and ourselves to help best support our client's needs," said Brooke Beiting, senior specialist in media relations for the company.

Mayor Frank Campion said it is very disappointing to see Convergys putting people out of work.

"I know it's a substantial number."

Campion said years ago Welland city councils were a driving force to bring call centres to the city because they were great employers and provided jobs with good benefits.

"It's disappointing to see them go. It's out of our control but we'll do everything we can for all of the people left behind … we'll fill in the gaps."

The mayor said there are jobs in Welland that Convergys employees can apply for.

"The Job Gym has told me there are companies looking for people."

Campion said the city will launch a page on its website to provide direction to people as to where to look for jobs.

"We'll try and provide as much help as we can to those in the community."

He said the city and its economic development team will look to find someone to fill the vacancy at the Lincoln Centre plaza.

"We'll get someone else in there if we can, whether it be another call centre or something else. We're always looking for more industry in Welland," Campion said.
