News : Convergys Plans Up to 281 Layoffs at Pharr Call Center
Pharr, TX, USA, March 3, 2015 -- Convergys plans to lay off up to 281 call center workers and shut down the company's Pharr Contact Center on April 30.
Management informed workers at the 500 N. Jackson Road call center about the impending layoffs last week, said company spokeswoman Brooke Beiting.
"Basically our lease on the building will expire on Aug. 31 and we decided not to renew the lease in that location," Beiting said.
Convergys operated from the former El Centro mall in Pharr. The mall owner recently demolished the aging building — except for the Convergys call center — and rebranded it Pharr Town Center.
Convergys informed the Texas Workforce Commission about the layoffs on Feb. 24.
"Although we are closing the physical location, Convergys will maintain a presence in the area through a number of work-at-home positions," according to the letter from Convergys to the Workforce Commission. "All current Pharr employees are being encouraged to apply for these and other Convergys opportunities, with selection based on established requirements."
