News : Cops Bust Two Fake Call Centres in Jaipur, 23 Held for Duping Foreigners


Jaipur, India, Feb, 2020 -- Police raided two fake call centres here on Monday and arrested 23 employees for duping people in the US, China and Hong Kong on the pretext of giving them loans.

Police arrested 16 people from the call centre at Shyam Nagar, while seven were held from the hub operating out of Shipra Path. All the accused are well educated, police said.

Vimal Singh Nehra, additional DCP (Jaipur South) said, "We got to know that fake call centres, targeting foreigners, are operating in the city. We began surveillance and after confirming the activities, raided two places and arrested the accused."

Explaining the modus operandi of the gang in Shyam Nagar, Nehra said: "The accused would gather contact details of Americans using websites like Yellow Page directories. They would then either generate voice calls or email their victims saying their loans have been approved or that they can apply for loans. They would explain the American loan process to their unwary targets and, once a person bought into this, the accused asked them to give a security deposit."

The accused, however, did not accept cash or cheque. "They asked their victims to buy gift cards from various online shopping sites and then ask them to scratch the number printed on the back of the card. Following th0is, they would sell this number either virtually, or in person, in return for bitcoins. They would then get the bitcoins) encashed in places like Ahmedabad," Nehra said.

The Shipra Path gang adopted a variant model, though the common factor was that they also duped people in the name of loan sanction.

"In this case, the accused got the foreign citizens' data online. They called them giving the same story about loans as the other gang. They made a fake link of a real American finance company and ask the person to give a security deposit of $200 to $500 into that account. Once they got the person’s account details, they sold it to others in exchange for commission. The buyers of this gang were usually based in China and Hong Kong," Nehra said.

Police are also looking out for other such call centres operating in Jaipur and are questioning the accused for information on this score.
