News : Crisis Call Center Volunteers Enjoy Making a Difference
Reno, NV, USA, Sept 5, 2016 -- As Americans celebrate the Labor Day holiday, there are some who are still busy answering the call for help. Among them are the volunteers at the Crisis Call Center in Reno. They fill an important need, but the organization needs more help to answer a growing number of crisis phone calls.
One of those volunteers is Nancy Rodolico, a retired teacher who now spends part of her week answering phones at the Crisis Call Center. Another is Sally Waterman, who at age 82, finds satisfaction in knowing her knowledge and life experience can be helpful to those who are in crisis.
"They usually just need someone to talk to," Waterman said.
"If someone is suicidal they may be calling because they don't really want to commit suicide. They need someone to help them figure out what to do instead," she added.
Waterman and Rodolico are part of a team of volunteers who help out at the Crisis Call Center. They each work a 4-hour shift, answering calls and text messages from people who may be suicidal, depressed or confused by what life has thrown their way.
Rodolico says the 33 years she spent as a teacher in the Washoe County School District definitely pays off in her new role answering the crisis phone lines.
"I think because I taught school, if they call and are having an issue with a school or teacher, I can relate to that," Rodolico said.
One thing all volunteers learn is that each call that comes into the Crisis Call Center is unique.
"They may just need to talk and vent a little bit," Rodolico explained. "It varies so much."
And some calls prove to be much more challenging than others.
But at the end of the day, knowing they have helped someone in a time of crisis or steered them in the right direction leaves these volunteers feeling much better about their own lives as well.
"There's always challenges, but you always feel like it's worth the time that you put in." said Rodolico.
And her partner Waterman concurred.
"It's pretty dramatic," she said. "Sometimes you get off the phone and you feel, wow, I've made a difference."

No experience is needed. The CCC staff says the training will teach you everything you need to know.
