New Delhi, India, Oct, 2021 -- The Delhi Police has busted an illegal telephone exchange racket where calls were routed from Gulf countries and Pakistan. Initial investigation has revealed that more than two lakh Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls were generated from Gulf nations and nearly 50,000 calls were from Pakistan.
The Delhi Police is suspecting that these VoIP calls might have been used to plot terror. In August, Delhi Police’s Special Cell had busted a nexus that was operating a fake call centre and duping people. The mastermind and owner of the call centre was on the run. He has now been arrested in the raid.
What is VoIP?
VoIP is simply digital calling over the internet. When the internet developed and multiple protocols were introduced, many innovators understood that they could use this technology to send voice signals for free instead of relying entirely on landlines.
How is VoIP misused?
Location tracking is the major issue when it comes to VoIP and this is why it is misused by terrorists. The calls are initiated from an IP address that has no GPS data. VoIP calls were also used by LeT during the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai.
Delhi Police is now investigating whether these calls that were routed from Pakistan and other Gulf countries were from terror handlers.
