News : Dial 1990 for Free Ambulance Service in Southern Province
Galle, Sri Lanka, July 29, 2016 -- All people living in the Southern Province can call 1990 anytime of the day and obtain a free service of a modern ambulance from today in whatever medical emergency, Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva said.
The ambulance will arrive in 30 minutes after the call is made. The service will be available to the entire Western Province in another two weeks, he said.
Dr. de Silva said the project is being implemented with US Indian assistance. The project elements include an emergency response centre, deployment of 108 ambulances in the Southern and Western Provinces and recruitment and training of nearly 600 Sri Lankan personnel to implement the project. Over 550 Sri Lankans are provided employment including 250 EMTs who were trained in India for two months. In addition 250 pilots and 50 call centre operators have been trained.
Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said that various persons and groups opposed establishing the service but answers have been provided to them silencing them.
