News : Digital Tax System Blamed for Surge in HMRC Fraud

London, UK, June 3, 2019 -- Phone scams targeting taxpayers have skyrocketed, with more than 100,000 reported to HM Revenue & Customs in 2018-19 alone.

This is a huge increase on the 407 reports received in 2016-17 and the 7,778 in 2017-18.

Tax experts have said the "digitisation" of Britain’s tax regime has opened the doors for scammers to take advantage of gaps in HMRC’s technology.

Dawn Register of tax planners BDO, said: "It’s clear that digitisation has created a glowing opportunity for fraudsters. In recent years HMRC has begun using multiple means of communication including text, email and social media as well as phone, which provides fraudsters with further opportunities to dub unsuspecting taxpayers
