News : Education Dept Asks Schools to Display Child Helpline Number
Panaji, India, Nov 6, 2019 -- Taking cognisance of the increasing number of crimes against students taking place in schools, the department of education has enjoined upon all the heads of the government, as well as government aided and unaided schools to display ‘Child Helpline number 1098’ in the schools and send a compliance report to the department at the earliest.
"The Supreme Court has taken suo moto cognisance of alarming rise in the number of child rape cases in the country related to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act," a DoE circular adds, pointing out, "In the writ petition (Criminal) No 1/2019, the Supreme Court vide order dated July 25, 2019 has issued direction that ‘Child helpline No 1098’ should be displayed at various other prominent places, in schools and other public places."
In yet another circular, the director of education, Vandana Rao states that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has launched nationwide unified Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) with a single emergency number 112, for all kinds of emergencies and distress calls from across the country.
"ERSS is designated to address distress signals from citizens in the form of voice call, SMS, panic SOS request, web request, etc. All these distress signals are sent to the common number 112," the circular maintains, further directing, "Henceforth, all the existing emergency numbers like 100 (Police), 101 (Fire and Rescue), and 108 (Ambulance), 181 (Women and Child Care), etc will be integrated to a unified number 112."

The particular circular also asks the school students and staff to use single emergency number 112, for all kinds of emergencies.
Furthermore, the department of education has directed all the heads of the government, government aided and unaided schools to send applications of the students, who have achieved "deed of courage and daring", which would offer the students an opportunity to shine and have an extraordinary reach.
The direction by way of a circular comes with reference to the ‘Indian Council for Child Welfare National Bravery Awards for Children 2019’ as instituted by the Indian Council for Child Welfare, in order to felicitate the children for exemplary acts of bravery.
The main objective of the scheme is to give due recognition to the children, who perform acts of bravery, with a view to inspire other children to follow their example.
"The deed should be an act of spontaneous selfless service in the face of risk to life or threat or physical injury and or an act of courage and daring against a social evil/ crime," the circular notes.
