News : Helpline for NRIs on Cards
Bangalore, June 20, 2014 -- The NRI Forum of Karnataka, a government agency, is planning to soon set up an exclusive helpline and a coordination committee. NRIs from the State have long been demanding a helpline and coordination committee to redress their grievances.
Vice-Chairman of the forum V C Prakash told Express that Kerala, Punjab and Gujarat have exclusive helplines and coordination committees to help NRIs from their states.
NRIs get help on various issues like encroachment of their properties and providing health services for their parents. It also helps in checking human trafficking, he said.
"We are pursuing this demand of our NRIs vigorously. I will personally take up the issue with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah soon. The request has already been submitted to Home Minister K J George and we have received a favourable response," Prakash said.
Speaking to Express, K Muralidhara, member secretary of the forum, said complaints and distress calls are pouring in from NRIs in various parts of the globe, like the USA, Australia and Gulf.
"We received three complaints in a single day on June 16. Most of them are related to encroachment of land and other property related issues. NRIs seek help as they cannot rush here suddenly to resolve the issue. They want the forum to help them. We are determined to fulfil their demand for a helpline and coordination committee," he added.
The proposed coordination committee should be headed by a police officer of the rank of IGP.
The co-ordination committee should refer the complaints to departments concerned and monitor the progress of redressal, Muralidhara said.
