News : Express Impact: Mumbai Police to Double Staff Strength of Cyber Crime Helpline Desk

Mumbai, India, Nov 7, 2023 - Mumbai police, next week, is set to double the strength of staff who attend to the 1930 cyber crime helpline number, officials said. The department has decided to increase the number of staffers to 22 from the current 11, who work in two shifts, after The Indian Express reported the issue on Monday.

The Indian Express pointed out that due to a shortage of hands at the helpline desk, most Mumbai residents who fell prey to cyber frauds were unable to get assistance via the nation-wide helpline number. In most cases, an automated response would be followed by the line getting cut with the message ‘line busy’.

The crime branch that oversees the helpline number had earlier admitted that they could not cater to more than one in four calls.

In the 15 times that The Indian Express tried calling the number, in three months– August, September and October— it got through only twice. "We have given a proposal to increase the number of staff incharge of attending the calls. Each staffer needs a computer, a telephone line, and a printer. We have sought more computers," an IPS officer said.

As attending one call usually takes nearly 20 minutes, the officer said, the new development will improve the number of people who get assistance.

Mumbai, considered the nation’s financial capital, is plagued by cyber crimes, with victims getting duped of lakhs of rupees on a daily basis to scamsters calling from across the state.
