Navi Mumbai, India, Sept, 2019 -- The central unit of the Navi Mumbai Crime Branch has busted a fake call centre that cheated U.S. citizens by claiming that their computers had been hit by a virus attack. The Crime Branch officers have arrested five men, who charged their victims between $400 and $1,500 to fix their computers, and seized 17 hard disks, two laptops and six cell phones from them.
Based on a tip-off, the central unit raided office no. 803 at Elora Fista tower at Sector 11 in Sanpada at 1.30 a.m. on Thursday. The team consisted of police inspector Nivrutti Kolhatkar, assistant police inspectors Rajesh Gajjal, Nilesh Tambe and Rani Kale, and a few personnel.
The accused, who are former employees of call centres, have been identified as Mansoor Ali Qasim Shaikh (29), Mohammad Sajid Mohammad Junaid Shaikh (29), Mohammad Jahir Mohammad Shaikh (32), Mohammad Farhan Mohammad Tasdiq Shaikh (28) — all residents of Chita Camp — and Murtuza Akhtar Motarvala (30), a resident of Mira Road. Mansoor was the director of the call centre, Sajid and Farhan were team leaders, and Jahir was the technician. Murtaza had a U.S. bank account and the victims were asked to transfer money to him. Twelve people worked as trainees at the call centre. The accused had rented the office space in June and worked at night. The police have not been able to find the exact amount in the bank account, but the accused claim it is close to $30,000.
Mr. Kolhatkar said, "The accused threatened to file money laundering and drug peddling cases against their victims if they failed to pay up." He said Murtaza collected the data on U.S. citizens from a call centre in Belapur, in which he had 25% stake. The accused have been charged for cheating, personation, and extortion under sections of the IT Act.
