News : Fake Call Centre Busted, Two Arrested
New Delhi, India, Dec 22, 2015 -- Two men have been arrested for duping several persons of lakhs of rupees on the pretext of offering high bonus amounts on their existing or expired insurance policies.
While Pawan Kumar Sharma, the alleged mastermind of the racket holds a BSc degree, his accomplice Abhishek Kumar is a BBA graduate.
The Delhi Police’s Crime Branch, which busted the racket, said the accused persons were running a full-fledged call centre which they used to dupe the victims.
The police found the call centre to be equipped with 48 telephone lines, allegedly used for cheating people.
The matter came to the Crime Branch’s notice a few weeks ago, when a woman from Uttam Nagar complained of being duped of Rs.12.35 lakh, said a senior police officer.
Someone had called her and promised her a bonus of Rs.40 lakh on her existing LIC policy. She fell in the trap and ended up depositing several lakhs of rupees into the fraudsters’ account as registration fee and other charges.
The police launched surveillance and soon traced the suspects to a call centre in Noida. Police said a lot of incriminating evidence has been recovered from the accused persons.
Posing as representatives of Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India, they would allegedly call random phone numbers and seek details of their insurance policies, if any.
The victim would be called again by another person who would try to lure him/her to deposit money in their accounts by making lofty promises of bonus amounts, said police.
The police have seized documents of several bank accounts in which the alleged fraudsters would get the victims to deposit the money.
They have also seized some SUVs, apparently purchased with the ill-gotten money.
