News : Fake Call Centre Duping US Citizens Busted in Kolkata, 20 Arrested

Kolkata, India, June 13, 2023 - The Kolkata Police on Tuesday arrested 20 people, including two women, for allegedly running a fake call centre racket to dupe and scam US citizens in Kolkata's Bidhannagar area.

Acting on specific input, the Kolkata Police raided the fake call centre - Hamerli Realcon Private Limited - in Salt Lake.

According to the police, the accused were using SIM cards purchased under fake Identity Documents (IDs) to dupe US citizens. Kolkata Police sources said that the accused mainly targeted users of online money wallets such as PayPal and Amazon Pay.

HOW THE FAKE CALL CENTRE FUNCTIONED

Explaining the modus operandi of the fraudsters, the police said that the duping began with an email. "In an email, they used to wrongly flag illegal transactions that had been done from the victim's account. A contact number was also provided by the fraudsters in the email, quoting it as a number to contact if the person has not done the transaction," Kolkata Police sources told India Today TV.

"Accordingly, this fraudulent group used to record the account details of those who made voice-over calls. They were then asked to invest in gift cards in the name of getting support," police sources added.

Highlighting the process involved in the movement of money, the Kolkata Police said that the amount invested by the US citizens in gift cards reached the fraudsters through hawala transactions. They functioned in collaboration with US-based fraudsters.

After sending the gift cards to the victims, US-based fraudsters used to send a picture of a part of the US Dollar note to the mobile phones of Kolkata-based fraudsters. After checking the number on this dollar note, the hawala operators would credit the money.

During the raid, the Kolkata Police recovered Rs 2.1 lakh along with mobiles, laptops, hard disks and router databases. Twenty people, including the directors of the fake call centre - Mohammad Fiyaz Alam, Mohammad Shahzada and Aliam Alam, were arrested by the police.

Following the raid, the Kolkata Police's cyber crime department began an investigation into the movement of money along the hawala route.

Earlier in May, the police arrested 12 people for running a fake call centre. In that operation, the police seized nearly Rs 45,000, along with smartphones, PAN cards, Aadhaar cards, internet routers, and documents containing the names of potential victims.

In another operation in the past, the Kolkata Police recovered unregistered SIM cards used to dupe people on the pretext of providing them with loans.

Typical Problem!

In-house surveys can be time consuming, cumbersome at best and many staff often don't provide valid feedback as they fear ‘being too honest' with their employer for fear of retribution.

Even some 3rd party ‘managed' surveys can be challenging, costly and then there is no benchmark or significant value other than ‘managed by a 3rd party' approach, which leads to the problem of validity of data, security and integrity plus costs and time required by you.

The Solution!

TopPlace2Work is an easy to use program that allows you to gather valuable data on employee morale and engagement.
