Kollam, India, Jan 29, 2016 -- Come February, and the Agriculture Department will launch a call centre-cum-information hub in the state, proffering all farming-related info virtually on your fingertip.
The facility named ‘Karshika Vivara Sangetham Oru Viral Thumpil’, other than answering queries through calls, will help farmers and the general public post their queries through various other online platforms like Facebook, Whatsapp, Skype or through the official website.
The facility will not only provide answers to questions pertaining to farming practices, crop varieties and crop protection measures and various types of farming methods but also will have options to market and purchase agri-products.
"Other than the traditional concept of answering queries through calls or SMS, we plan to use other platforms. The biggest challenge is data collection and updation of the same as this platform guarantees A to Z on farming. We are also integrating the farmers’ portal of the Union Ministry of Agriculture with this. The facility will provide a single window for farmers to trace out places where they could purchase a particular crop variety, machines and other farming-related accessories," said R Ajith Kumar, Director of Agriculture.
According to sources with the Department of Agriculture, the call centre-cum-information hub will be handled by the Small Farmers’ Aribusiness Consortium, and at the initial phase it will operate from 10 am to 5 pm.

"The website, in the making, will provide information on crop diseases, its symptoms, organic way of treating them, organic farming practices, hi-tech farming, urban farming practices and options to display and sell agri-products or to demand the same. It will also have a ‘frequently asked questions’ section where general queries will be cleared," an official said.
