News : Fate of 911 Call Center Will Rest in Voter's Hands
Wright County, MO, Aug 27, 2014 -- The fate of a 911 call center will soon be in the hands of voters. It is happening in Wright County, which shares the call center with neighboring Texas County.
Earlier this year, Texas County passed a 911 sales tax and now wants to break ties with Wright County. County commissioners say they've been looking at the options and an 3/8-cent sales tax to replace the existing land line fee is the best one they say they have.
"The state of Missouri doesn't allow us to tax a cell phone and because we can't have a tax on the cell phone, we kind of have no choice," says Zach Williams, Wright County Presiding Commissioner.
If we keep it floating like it is, it is not fair for people with land lines they are floating a bill for everybody to have a 911 service," says Williams.
If the tax isn't passed, Williams says dispatch would somehow have to find a place in the already cramped room at the sheriff's office.
"Every one of us sitting here has been behind that radio before and it gets jammed up here. It just get crazy there's not enough people," says Sheriff Glenn Alder.
"if the tax isn't passed, commissioners say they will try to get back and make something work for the people of wright county so they won't be without 911.
If voters approve the sales tax in November, Commissioners say it would take about 6 months to get the dispatch center up and running.
If it doesn't pass, they say they will make something work for the people of their county so they won't be without 911.
