News : Fears 200 Jobs Could Be Axed at Call Centre
March 27, 2014 -- The news that up to 200 call centre jobs are at risk in north Belfast has caused shockwaves in the community, an MLA has said.
A third of staff at Teletech could be out of work after the company lost a major contract to provide European customer support services for the car maker Nissan.
The contract has gone to the French company B2S.
One employee at the Duncairn Gardens offices told the BBC that workers have been told they could take up employment with B2S.
However, it it is thought that would involve relocating to France.
Teletech, a US-owned firm, has been in Belfast since 2001 and employs around 600 people.
Last night North Belfast MLA Gerry Kelly said: "If these reports are true, then it is a devastating blow to north Belfast and to the workers and their families.
"North Belfast is an area of high unemployment and this jobs blow would be hugely significant.
"The reports that up to one-third of the 600-strong workforce might lose their jobs has sent shockwaves across the local community."
