News : Fire Dept to Launch Helplines to Answer your Queries
Mumbai, India, March 24, 2016 -- Want to know how to get fire safety certificate for your building? Confused about fire prevention methods? Want to be a volunteer for the Mumbai fire brigade? The answers to all these questions lies in a helpline number, soon to be launched by the fire brigade.
Citizens can dial the fire prevention helpline (FPH) number to know about the dos and don’ts during fire and other calamities. They can also get information on obtaining fire safety certificates and the licenced agencies for maintaining fire installations.
All buildings in the city are expected to submit a fire safety certificate of their building twice a year - in January and July - according to the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006. Societies can also be penalised for lack of compliance.
Citizens can also dial the helpline to register themselves as volunteers. At present, the fire brigade is running a programme to train citizens in fire prevention and register them as citizen volunteers, who can help the brigade in times of an emergency.
PS Rahangdale, chief fire officer of the Mumbai fire brigade said, "Citizens can dial the helpline any time for information on anything that concerns the fire department. They can also get guidance on becoming volunteers for the department, The helpline will be launched by April 14 during the fire safety week in the city."
The increasing number of fire incidents and the lack of information in the public domain has pushed the brigade towards this first of a kind initiative.
An official, who is working closely with the project, said on condition on anonymity, "We have noticed many a times when people are clueless about how to act during emergencies. This helpline will not only offer immediate assistance but also create awareness about fire safety rules and measures."
