News : Firm Has 50 Jobs Going in Sunderland, But No Takers
Dec 23, 2013 -- A company owner hoping to employ workers from crisis-hit npower today told how he is struggling to give 50 jobs away.
Despite the current economic climate, Andrew Maddison says he is hitting brick walls when it comes to filling the 50-plus positions he has on offer.
Mr Maddison, who co-owns Sunderland-based Go Fish Saving Ltd, has just signed a new contract with a telecommunications company allowing him to create the new posts.
The businessman has contacted various different agencies and was keen to promote the jobs to the 430 npower workers, whose posts are set to be axed from the company’s Rainton Bridge site.
Mr Maddison, from Southwick, Sunderland, said: "After I read about what had happened at npower I thought these new positions would be ideal for some of the workers affected.
"But I’m struggling to get information out there that these jobs are available."
Just weeks ago, npower announced plans to transfer 430 backroom posts from its Houghton call centre to India, as part of a massive revamp which will see it close centres in Peterlee, Thornaby and Stoke.
GMB northern region union bosses accused the firm of playing politics with people’s lives.
Mr Maddison said he is now keen to hear from affected workers to see if they are suitable for posts within his company.
Go Fish Savings is a brokerage firm for business gas and electricity based in Villiers Street in the city centre, which currently employs 40 people.
Mr Maddison said: "I feel I’m in a position to offer jobs at the minute and feel they would be suitable for some of npower’s employees."
Business Secretary Vince Cable has pledged to help the former npower workers after Houghton and Sunderland South MP Bridget Phillipson wrote expressing her concern for the staff.
