News : 80 Jobs at Risk as Firstsource Staff Put on Notice
Nov 29, 2013 -- Workers at a Middlesbrough call centre have been told their jobs are at risk.
Outsourcing company Firstsource wants to axe up to 80 jobs at its Fountain Court centre on Grange Road.
The 420 employees at the Middlesbrough site have been told that up to 20% of the workforce will be cut, and workers have been put on 45 days’ redundancy notice.
Bosses say that, depending on the outcome of the consultation process, they expect the final redundancies figure to be a lot less than 80.
A spokesperson said: "We are going through a process of interim consultation with colleagues in our Middlesbrough centre, in relation to potential downsizing of a part of the work that we perform for a client. "We are consulting with everyone to give them various options.
"Although 20% seems like a significant figure, we expect the final headline figure will be a lot less than that, because we have other clients and other options. We wanted to give people plenty of forewarning, so there are no surprises. "We will be discussing various options with people. They could include moving to different clients’ work, and relocation options.
"We do emphasise the fact that we are trying to be as open and transparent with colleagues as possible.
"There maybe people that want to move on, in which case we can give them the best possible package.
"We are talking to everybody, so that everybody knows what is happening."
It’s not the first time that staff at Fountain Court have feared for their jobs - last November, some workers were placed under a 90-day consultation period after work dealing with PPI claims was scaled down for client Barclaycard.
One worker, who did not want to be named, said they were given the news about the latest redundancies by bosses on November 20. "It was this time last year that we were put on redundancy notice," he said. "It was horrible."
The Firstsource spokesperson added: "Some jobs are at risk, but not everyone who works in the centre will be affected by this change and currently, there are no reductions in the workforce in Middlesbrough. "We expect that any changes in the workforce in Middlesbrough will take effect towards the end of January."
