News : Fraudsters Learn English to Run Fake Call Centres in South Kolkata

Kolkata, India, July 26, 2023 - The detective department has busted four fake call centres across south Kolkata and arrested 17 people. Cops said some of the fraudsters had undergone English training to dupe people. Two of them, Sandip Naskar and his partner, Suraj Singh, also had the allegations of heinous crimes against them. While Naskar was charged under Pocso Act for his involvement in a case pertaining to assault on a minor, Singh was charged under the Arms Act. Both of them had served jail sentences.

Cops raided the call centres at Garfa, Golf Green and Haridevpur and found the accused had amassed huge wealth by duping foreign nationals in US, Europe and Australia.

"Laptop and mobile phones have been seized from Naskar and Singh who were directly involved in running the call centres. The two had enrolled in an English course a few months before setting up fake call centres across south Kolkata. Both of them became new brand avatars as Sandip changed his name to Sandy and Suraj to SS," said an officer.

"We conducted one of the raids at Shahid Nagar in Garfa and arrested eight people, of whom two were owners. Following their statements, another office was raided near that place and seven others were arrested. The accused used to pose as the employees of eBay, Amazon and other reputed companies and took control of the victims’ computers to siphon off money," said joint CP (crime) Shankha Shubra Chakrabarty.

The ARS, another wing of the detective department, carried out simultaneous raids at two other call centres and nabbed the rest. "We have come to know that a couple of those arrested on Tuesday were close to the history-sheeter and extortionist, S K Vinod," said a police source.

Cases have been drawn up under both Indian penal code sections and the IT sections.

"The accused had been using hawala channels to bring money to India," said a police source.
