News : Free Legal Assistance Available to Flood Victims
New Orleans, LA, USA, March, 2016 -- Survivors of recent flooding in Louisiana who need legal advice may take advantage of free legal counseling via a toll-free hotline (1-800-310-7029), operated by the Louisiana Civil Justice Center in partnership with the Louisiana State Bar Association’s disaster legal assistance plan.
Through the call center and staff provided by LCJC, legal information/advice will be provided to low-income storm survivors who have been financially impacted as a result of recent flooding. LCJC operates the hotline from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. Staff will provide resources and assist callers with legal issues, including FEMA disaster assistance, insurance claims, landlord-tenant issues, home-repair contracts, consumer-protection matters. Legal assistance for Spanish-speaking callers can be arranged via a callback appointment. Referrals to appropriate local or state agencies will also be provided by the hotline volunteers.
Callers should be aware that there are some limitations on disaster legal services. For example, assistance is not available for cases that will produce a fee (i.e., those cases where attorneys are paid part of the settlement by the court). Such cases are referred to a local lawyer referral service. Hotline staff can help you determine whether an issue qualifies for free legal assistance.
"The Louisiana Civil Justice Center is committed to addressing the legal needs of Louisiana’s residents, whether in ordinary or extraordinary times," said LCJC Executive Director Jonathan Rhodes. "By experiencing the aftermath of previous storms, LCJC has learned of the magnitude and scope of the legal needs that follow such catastrophes. With that information in hand, the hotline serves as a free and accessible service for vulnerable resident to resolve legal issues in an emergency," Rhodes added.
The Louisiana Civil Justice Center (LCJC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides legal services to low-income, elderly and disaster-affected persons in Louisiana. Through a toll-free legal aid hotline, community clinics and programs, the LCJC provides critical legal assistance for more than 10,000 residents each year.
