News : Frontier’s New London Call Center Gets Boost
New London, CT, USA, Dec 15. 2015 -- Frontier Communications confirmed that it plans to add 40 new positions to its downtown call center starting early next year.
The extra employees would be a big boost from the telephone company's 77 current employees.
It also would increase Frontier's previous commitment of having 100 call-center employees downtown to nearly 120.
"We are expanding and enhancing our services," said Frontier spokeswoman Liz Grey Gadbout in a telephone interview. "Frontier is committed to Connecticut."
Gadbout said 35 of the new employees will be call-center sales representatives while five will have supervisory roles. The company currently is recruiting new talent in expectation of holding a training class for new hires Jan. 11, she added.
William Henderson, president of the Communication Workers of America Local 1298, said in a seperate phone interview Tuesday that some of the personnel moving into Frontier's call center on State Street could be transfers from New Haven.
Meanwhile, Gadbout said the company was adding 35 new jobs to its New Haven call center.
"We pushed hard for it," Henderson said. "New London has great things happening and we want to be part of that. What better Christmas present than a new job?"
The 20,000-square-foot New London call center that Frontier acquired in its purchase of AT&T's landline, broadband and U-verse television businesses last year once hosted hundreds of employees. But AT&T slowly had cut personnel before finally closing the call center last year, eliminating the last of the state's century-old tradition of telephone operators.
The closure had forced local employees to drive to New Haven for work until many of them returned with Frontier's decision to reopen the call center. It's a decision that Henderson said has brought positive results for the company.
"You make an investment in people, and it will pay off," Henderson said. "The best social services program we can have is jobs."
