News : Ganesh Mandal’s Helpline in Pune a Hit
Pune, India, Aug 4, 2015 -- A campaign named 'Change India’ is helping Pune residents with over 400 different kinds of everyday services on a regular basis. Started by Akhil Bhusari Colony Vikas Mandal, a Ganesh mandal, the helpline provides guidance right from providing help to locate a maid, electrician or plumber to guiding the residents where to complain about damaged footpaths, burst pipelines and street lights that have been left switched on.
Started seven years back at Bhusari colony, the mandal started with helping the new settlers of the area. Speaking with iamin, Sachin Dhankute, one of the founder members of the helpline said, "We were a Ganesh mandal actually, so people asked us for help to get in touch with those carrying out plumbing work and things like that. We thought of starting a helpline for the new residents, making a list of the services that would be needed and helping them with contacts."
The group initially started with providing 100 basic services like a maid, gardener and baby sitter but now they provide 400 different services to residents all over Pune. "We also provide solutions to women facing security issues, contact details of those carrying out pest control, computer repair service providers and vegetable vendors. What we do is find out the requirement of the resident and send the required person to their home to do the job. We provide the service free of cost to all," added Dhankute.
The idea of the helpline is to also provide employment to the economically backward sections of the city. "Bungalow and flat owners do not necessarily know everyone in their area. We are connecting these poor service providers with the clients. This way the economically backward also get a fair chance to earn," Dhakute added. The group maintains a database of the identity proofs of all the service providers as a security measure.
Around 12 members of the group are dedicated to this service.
