News : Government Rescues 181 Helpline, Staff Get Dues
New Delhi, March 5, 2014 -- The Delhi government has at last acted to rescue the 181 helpline, which for the past 14 months has been a lifeline for women in distress across the city.
A day after TOI reported that the helpline was on the verge of closure because employees had neither been paid salaries for two months nor had their contracts been renewed, the staff received their dues on Tuesday. The employees, who till Monday were in uncertainty about the future of service, were told on Tuesday that government had renewed their contracts and decided to continue the helpline in its present form.
"All personnel working in the helpline are on contractual appointment basis and the contract has been extended up to March 31, 2014," a statement issued by the government said.
The helpline was one of the major steps taken by the Delhi government to make the city safer for women in the aftermath of the Nirbhaya case. The helpline provides immediate assistance to women in distress and has received more than 7 lakh calls till date.
The statement said the government was committed to the smooth functioning of the helpline. It said review of the helpline was being done on a regular basis. "The lieutenant-governor has taken a review on February 21 and it was decided to continue the helpline in its present form and with the existing set up," it said.
