News : Grand Opening Held in Center Point for New 911 Center
Center Point, AL, USA, Oct 21, 2015 -- Jefferson County now has a new comprehensive 911 center that serves 18 cities.
Officials on Wednesday held a ribbon cutting to open the consolidated 911 center in the Center Point Satellite office. Taxes on cell phones and phone lines help pay for the center.
The facility promises to eliminate delays of responding to emergencies. "The main thing is saving lives. When you can do something to get help to emergencies sooner it saves lives. It's that simple", Howard Summerford, Jefferson County 911 Director said.
Sheriff Mike Hale said the center can help out during a multi-jurisdictional chase of a suspected criminal. "The public can be alerted to avoid a certain area of the county or city quicker. It's just a faster, more secure way to communicate", Hale said.

County Commissioner Joe Knight says it's cheaper for a small city to be a part of the coverage than to create their own call center.
"So much easier to join in, work together and make this a functional unit everyone can participate in", Knight said.
The new 911 center is up and running but people involved with this operation are promising to evolve even more to make it more accessible and quicker reaction times in the future.
