News : Gwalior Police Busted Fraud Call Center Targeting US and UK Citizens

Bhopal, India, Apr 2, 2024 - Gwalior police claimed to have busted an international fraud call center operating from a hotel room in the Madhavnagar colony. The operation exposed a sophisticated scheme targeting foreign citizens, primarily from the United States and the United Kingdom.

Members of the fraud gang, masquerading as representatives of Microsoft, utilized the EYE BEAM VOIP CALLING app to dupe unsuspecting victims by falsely claiming their computers were infected with viruses, subsequently siphoning funds from their accounts.

The alleged mastermind behind this illicit operation is believed to be operating from Dubai. The breakthrough in the case was attributed to the proactive efforts of Padav police station in-charge, Ila Tandon.

Authorities are currently evaluating the extent of the fraud and the number of individuals victimized by these scammers.

During the raid on the call center, law enforcement apprehended seven persons —six males and one female— engaged in fraudulent activities. They were identified as Abhay Rajawat, Nitesh Kumar, Deepak Thapa, Parvez Alam, Shweta Bharti, Raj Kailashkar, and Suresh Wasel, were found conversing in English via the app, targeting unsuspecting foreigners. Remarkably, they had only been operating in Gwalior for seven days before their arrest.

Inside the hotel room, police found a fully equipped setup including laptops and mobile phones, with the call center employees conversing in English and contacting international numbers from the US and UK. Sanjay Bhadauria and Karna facilitated the setup, providing essential equipment and logistical support, while data and mobile numbers were supplied by Monty Sikarwar.

During interactions with victims, the fraudsters adopted foreign aliases such as "Mr. Paul," "Martin," "John," "Ryan," "Cyber Expert," "Devil," and "Nancy," to bolster credibility and deceive their targets. Call center employees were reportedly enticed with monthly salaries ranging from Rs 20,000 to 25,000, coupled with a 5% commission on defrauded amounts, orchestrated by Monty and Karna, rendering the operation financially lucrative for all involved.

Seized items from the hotel room included eight laptops, fifteen mobile phones, an Airtel Extreme Fiber Modem, a calling script, data seats, headphones, LAN equipment, power extension boards, tables, and wristwatches. The suspects, originating from various cities and states, are currently under interrogation for further details.
