News : Health Link Unveils New 811 Line for Albertans Seeking Medical Advice
Calgary, AB, Canada, June 1, 2015 -- Getting free health advice over the phone just became easier on the fingers of Albertans.
Alberta Health Services Monday unveiled a new three-digit number for its 24/7 Health Link service, where callers will now only have to dial 811.
The slimmed down phone number aligns with similar lines operating in Saskatchewan and B.C. since 2013.
Melissa McDougall, site manager for Calgary’s Health Link centre, said taking the number from 10 digits to three will likely convince more people to take advantage of the service.
"Albertans have come to know the (old) number, but it’s a lot easier to contact us now," she said.
"We are expecting an increase in calls basked on Saskatchewan’s experience."
Advice for callers:
48% told to care for themselves at home
36% advised to visit doctor or other health care provider
16% advised to go to an emergency department
Top three reasons for Health Link calls in 2014:
1. Respiratory problems
2. Contagious diseases
Number of languages Health Link is offered in: 200
