News : Helpline to Counsel Depressed Persons Launched
Hyderabad, India, Feb 26, 2015 -- ‘1 Life’, a helpline for counselling persons in depression and those with suicidal tendencies, was started in the city.
The helpline having round-the-clock call centre with trained personnel to attend calls was started by NRI K. Suresh Bharadwaj working as software engineer in Qatar and his two friends P. Vikranth and Sai Sri Krishna. It was formally launched by Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences Director A. Narendranath.
Based in Hyderabad, the helpline (No. 78930 78930) personnel would attend to calls originating from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States.
To prevent suicides
They would speak to the callers, assess the criticality, understand situation and suggest personal counsellors to the callers.
"If the caller is too distressed, we would ask them to visit the centre and a personal counsellor would handle the situation," 1 Life president K.V.S. Suryanarayana said. He said the primary aim of starting the helpline was to prevent suicides and serve people in tier two cities.
Persons who can spend an hour a week can register with the helpline online and act as counsellors.
They would be trained to handle persons in depression.
Trained personnel will assess the situation and suggest counsellors to the callers
