News : 'Home Managers' On Call for NDMC Residents
New Delhi, India April 28, 2015 -- The NDMC will soon make available services of on-call "home managers" for residents in its jurisdiction.
This is a part of the council’s expansion plan for its unit "Urja" which currently comprises 30 underprivileged women. The project aims to make women from the economic backward class self-reliant. Till now, the women were running dabba services for employees of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). The council is now in the process of recruiting more women for the role of "home managers".
The council will provide on-call helps to households. The rates will be standardised by the council so that there is no chance of the women being under-paid by the service seekers. These women will be trained in running modern gadgets to fixing basic electricity problems, according to an NDMC official.
Residents who want to seek services of a help have to register with the council in advance. Once the council completes the verification process, they will be registered in the NDMC’s database for reference. The council will also run a separate verification process for the women being engaged.
However, before being pressed into service, these women will undergo training for operating all modern home gadgets.
"The women will assume the role of effective home managers. This project will help employ more women into service. Also, more households now seek services of a help only on weekends. The on-call service will help many working women out," said Vidushi Chaturvedi, Director of Education, NDMC.
The council will also recruit women from the technical institute run by it besides those who approach it.
"The women will be given an intensive training on how to run gadgets like washing machines, dishwashers and microwave. They will also be given training on fixing basic electricity glitches. We are aiming at providing high quality services," said Chaturvedi.
In the initial phase, the calls will be handled by the call centre of the council. If there is a house party, the council will give the option of catering services from "Urja" as well.
The council is also planning to tie up with restaurants for a month’s training to provide soft skills to the women running dabba services.
In the first phase, the women will start handling the canteen services at the NDMC Headquarters at Palika Kendra and the Palika Services Officers’ Institute club of the council, said an official.
