News : Insight Data Centre to Create 300 Jobs
Dec 13, 2013 -- Three hundred jobs are to be created through a multi-location research centre, co-led between University College Cork and three other institutions across the country. The largest investment in a single research centre in the history of the State, Insight, the new Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Research Centre for Data Analytics, is being hailed as "essential" for Ireland's success in the expanding field of big data.
University College Cork joins Dublin City University, NUI Galway, and University College Dublin for the project, bringing together more than 200 researchers from these and other higher education institutions along with 30 industry partners. Ranging from small Irish start-ups to established SMEs and large multinationals, the Cork companies include leading global forestry technology company TreeMetrics; real-time transportation technology company Carma; global provider of high-technology products UTRC; customer contact call centre Abtran; integrated eCommerce provider NitroSell and procurement software company, Keelvar. Coupled with the creation of 300 direct jobs over the next six years, Insight research is also expected to result in 12 new spin-out companies, approximately 50 patent filings, and over 50 technology licenses, leading to thousands of indirect jobs in the data analytics sector.
UCC President Dr Michael Murphy said the University was "proud" to be involved with the Insight Centre. He outlined that it "builds upon the past success" of the Cork Constraint Computation Centre at UCC, and "heralds a new departure in inter-institutional and industrial collaboration to achieve Ireland’s strategic goal to become a world leader in the field of data analytics".
The new centre will receive funding from the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through SFI’s Research Centres Programme, along with a further contribution from the 30 industry partners.
