News : Westbourne IT Global Services Chooses Auckland over Australia
Auckland, New Zealand, Oct 8, 2015 -- An Irish information technology company is bringing 20 new jobs to Auckland, with ambitious expansion plans down under.
Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce will open Westbourne IT Global Services' office in Auckland's Wynyard Quarter.
Auckland beat out several other locations, including Sydney and Melbourne, for the firm's first international foray.
Chief executive and founder John O'Sullivan said the IT support jobs bore little resemblance to call centre roles often outsourced to low-wage countries.
"It's definitely not in that bracket," he said. "We're very much a high-quality, niche supplier of tech support."
Auckland was chosen because of its similar culture, IT expertise, and commercial opportunities, he said.
"We're actually delighted with the quality of technical people we've found here."
The office is expected to double in size over the next 12 months.
The first 20 staff are bilingual in English and either Japanese, Korean or Chinese.
Besides language skills, O'Sullivan said the company was looking for candidates with at least three to five years' experience and some sort of IT qualification.
He said the company would also work with local universities such as AUT to pair graduates up with experienced workers.
"As we grow, we'll be creating opportunities for staff to allow them to grow their careers."
New Zealand was attractive because of the 12-hour time difference to Ireland, which allowed around-the-clock support for global clients, he said.

"What we're trying to achieve is that no-one works what I consider to be the graveyard shifts," O'Sullivan said.
Westbourne IT's partnership model was designed to "take the IT headache away" so companies could get on with their core business, he said.
"We're not going to pretend we're a large company – we're not," said O'Sullivan. "We want to start small, and grow with the companies that are ambitious.
"We see great opportunities here in New Zealand," he said.
