News : JD(S)' Farmers' Helpline Receives 300 Calls
Bengaluru, India, July 14, 2015 -- The three helplines launched by the State JD(S) to register grievances from aggrieved farmers, has received over 300 calls from ryots across Karnataka on Monday, party members claimed.
Majority of the farmers are said to have complained about the crash in the prices of sugar and silk, seeking intervention from the government. The helpline is also said to have received calls from farmers growing groundnut, tur dal, and jowar, from districts including Haveri, Raichur, Gadag, Bidar, Belagavi, Davangere, Tumakuru, Bengaluru Rural, Chamarajanagar, Kolar, Mandya, Hassan, and Chikkamagaluru. Almost all of these farmers have not only availed loans from banks and cooperative institutions, they have also taken loans from moneylenders at high interest rates.
Of the 300 calls received, around 70 calls were ‘curiosity’ calls. The remaining calls have been recorded. The data corroborated will be played out to JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy, who will highlight the seriousness of the issue in the ongoing legislature session. Based on the severity of the case, district office-bearers will be asked to visit the farmers, and extend support.

For instance, Pradeep, from KB Cross, Tiptur who cultivates areca has accumulated a huge loan of Rs 24 lakh. According to him, the areca prices which were Rs 72,000 per quintal have plunged to Rs 33,000 per quintal. Unable to get a good price for his produce, he has sought the government to fix a minimum support price, and also waive off the interest on the loan availed. Malla Reddy from Huda village in Sindhanur taluk, Raichur district is in dire straits. He rued that the government was yet to clear the dues for sugarcane for two consecutive years. All of these farmers have sought an extension in time from the government to repay loans. The party will keep the helplines (9900031555, 9900025777, 08023619909) open for one month.
