News : Karmaloop Moves Call Center to New Jersey
Feb 19, 2014 -- Karmaloop, a Boston-based online retailer of streetwear, has moved its call center from Boylston Street to New Jersey and eliminated about 30 full-time local jobs.
Chief executive Greg Selkoe said Vcare Technology, a call center and billing company in Mount Laurel, N.J., now handles most of Karmaloop’s customer service calls. The shift, which took place last month, cut the retailer’s call center costs by more than 35 percent, he said.
Karmaloop initially hired Vcare two years ago to answer customer service e-mails.
"It’s a really good partnership," Selkoe said. "I’m disappointed and I would love to keep everyone here. I’m not planning on moving anything else out of Boston, but I have to do what’s right for the company, and these guys were the right group."
Karmaloop retained 15 customer service employees at its Boston headquarters.
Selkoe is also the founder of the Future Boston Alliance, a nonprofit that aims to makes the city a better place to attract young talent. He said he didn’t think moving the call center contradicted his work with the nonprofit.
"The fact that we did this allows me to continue to build Karmaloop and help more businesses in Boston," he said. "If there’s no Karmaloop, there’s no Alliance."
Karmaloop currently employs about 205 people, including 170 in Boston.
